THE LOVIN' SPOONFUL - Do You Believe in Magic
Audiophile 180 gram reissue from Speakers Corner
The Lovin' Spoonful landed a success in the mid-60s that target group foxes and self-proclaimed superstar terminators of today can only envy: The New York Times described the thoroughly likeable and majority-friendly all-round music, which is equipped with all the higher consecrations of blues, jazz, country and folk, as "timeless, traditional yet modern, lively and attractive to all generations". The concept of writing down-to-earth, authentic American music simply worked perfectly, so that the trio around singer John Sebastian could confidently do without a multimedia presentation of their characters - glamor, no thanks! Even years later, after the troupe had dispersed into individual musical destinies, Sebastian composed unerringly through his nickel glasses and landed at number one in the charts with the grooving theme tune to the US TV series "Welcome Back, Mr. Kotter".
"There's nothing fanatical about my music, nobody reacts to it by shouting loudly" - Sebastian judges of himself - "you smile when you hear it - maybe." With this in mind, all that remains is to greet this record with a joyful 'Welcome back'.
