REED LOU - Transformer (180g)
LOU REED - Transformer
Audiophile 180-gram reissue by Sony / Speakers Corner
One of the most important albums in rock & roll history! WithBowieas producer and backing vocalist, and Beatles collaborator and friendKlaus Voormanon bass. Every track on this magnificent record is a classic, especially the incredible“Perfect Day.” Notto mention“Satellite of Love” and, of course, the song of the century,“Walk on the Wild Side.”
It’s well known that comparisons rarely hit the mark, yet in the case of Lou Reed, they also reveal the utter uncertainty of those who made them. Is he the Chuck Berry or the Sergeant Pepper of the ’70s, or did Reed deliberately craft the image of a hypersensitive Frankenstein who recycled his neuroses and drug trips into sounds of horror? “Some records are so deliberately repulsive,” raged Rolling Stone magazine, “that you’d like to take physical revenge on the artists who committed them.”
But far from being an act of auditory assault, the album *Transformer*—which scored big on the charts just a few months after the somewhat lackluster release of his underground-leaning debut album—proved to be a different story. The album was produced with British support from David Bowie and Mick Ronson, who clearly knew exactly how to steer Reed’s songwriting talents into musically safe waters without watering down their hero’s biting sarcasm and humorous provocations.
Thus, alongside gritty guitar rock (“Vicious”), bittersweet balladry (“Perfect Day”), and even an old-time jazz parody slurred with a leaden tongue (“Goodnight Ladies”), the album features a diverse range of sounds. So why compare this highly original musical mix to anything else, when it’s so easy to simply listen to this record for what it is—an album with cult status
