45 RPM pressings – maximum fidelity on vinyl
Records cut at 45 revolutions per minute are regarded as the reference format for audiophile music lovers. Because the record spins faster, every second of music is spread over a considerably longer stretch of groove. This lets the stylus trace the finest details more precisely – the sound becomes noticeably more detailed, clearer and more spacious, especially with jazz, classical and acoustic music.
Advantages of 45 RPM vinyl
Why 45 rpm carries more sound
The key factor is groove speed – how fast the groove passes beneath the stylus. At 45 rpm it is around 35 % higher than at 33⅓ rpm. Every oscillation of the music signal is therefore “spread out” over more groove length. High frequencies don’t have to be cut as tightly, and the stylus can follow them more precisely.
This is especially audible towards the end of a side: towards the centre the groove circumference gets smaller and the speed drops – at 33⅓ rpm, tracing distortion and treble losses increase there. A 45 rpm pressing still has as much reserve on the inner grooves as a 33 does further out.
There is also more latitude in the cut: because each side is shorter, the mastering engineer can cut higher levels and wider bass excursions. The result is more dynamics, a quieter background and a more stable, deeper soundstage.

| Groove speed, outer edge | approx. 51 cm/s | approx. 69 cm/s |
| Groove speed, inner edge | approx. 21 cm/s | approx. 28 cm/s |
| Playing time per side | approx. 18–25 min | approx. 12–15 min |
