Turntable accessories · Headshell
The headshell is the most inconspicuous yet one of the most crucial components of the tonearm: it holds the cartridge in place, determines its alignment with the groove and, through its weight, contributes directly to the moving mass of the entire arm. The analogis HS-13 Low Mass Headshell is consistently designed for low weight — at just 6.4 grams, it is one of the lightest in its class and thus provides an ideal base for lightweight, compliant cartridges.
Made from matt black aluminium, the HS-13 fits turntables from almost all manufacturers featuring a J- or S-shaped tonearm with a locking collar — the widely used SME connection. Cartridges with a standard ½″ mounting can be fitted with ease, whilst the slotted holes allow precise adjustment of the overhang. Colour-coded lead wires with silver-plated contacts are pre-fitted — simply unpack, connect the cartridge, adjust and enjoy the music.

Tonearm and cartridge together form a resonant system. Its resonance frequency is determined by the effective mass of the arm — including headshell, screws and cartridge — and the compliance of the stylus. If it lies within the recommended window of approximately 8 to 12 Hz, it remains safely above footfall and record warp and well below the audible music signal. The result: stable tracking, clean bass and a stylus that sits calmly in the groove.
Moving-magnet (MM) cartridges with high compliance in particular benefit from a lightweight headshell. If the moving mass is too high, the resonance frequency drops into the range where record warps and vibrations excite the arm — resulting in boomy bass, pumping speaker cones and, in extreme cases, a skipping stylus. Weighing just 6.4 grams, the HS-13 keeps the effective mass low, giving you greater flexibility when choosing a cartridge. Another advantage: when fitting lightweight cartridges, the tonearm’s counterweight is usually more than sufficient to set the correct tracking force.
Build Quality & Signal Path
The supplied 4-colour-coded lead wires follow the standard convention: white for the left channel, blue for left ground, red for the right channel and green for right ground. These colours are usually marked directly on the cartridge’s connection pins — so there is virtually no risk of mixing them up. The silver-plated contacts ensure low-resistance, corrosion-resistant connections and thus a clean, loss-free transmission of the sensitive phono signal, which amounts to just a few millivolts.
At the end of the tonearm, a rubber washer between headshell and arm tube ensures a secure, play-free connection. It prevents the headshell from twisting when the locking collar is tightened or from loosening during use — a stable coupling that translates directly into precise tracking.
Installation & Adjustment
The cartridge is fitted using the classic ½-inch mounting with two screws — the standard used worldwide for MM and MC cartridges. The slotted holes allow the cartridge to be moved forwards or backwards, so the overhang can be set precisely. Using an alignment protractor suited to your tonearm, the cartridge can be aligned tangentially at both null points — for minimal tracking error and low distortion across the entire side of the record.
The HS-13 is ideal as a second or interchangeable headshell: if, for example, you want to use another cartridge for mono records, old pressings or simply a different sound character, you can mount it fully aligned on its own headshell and swap it in seconds. After swapping, briefly check the tracking force and anti-skating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the analogis HS-13 fit my turntable?
The HS-13 fits any turntable whose tonearm has a detachable headshell with an SME connection. Here’s how to recognise it: at the front end of the J- or S-shaped tonearm there is a locking collar that holds the headshell. Tonearms with a fixed headshell – such as many straight tonearms – cannot be fitted with the HS-13.
Which cartridges is the HS-13 suitable for?
The HS-13 accepts all MM and MC cartridges with a standard ½″ mounting. Thanks to its low weight of 6.4 g, it is particularly well suited to lightweight moving-magnet cartridges with high stylus compliance. With very heavy MC cartridges of low compliance, it is worth checking in advance whether tonearm, headshell and cartridge are a good match.
What do I need to adjust after installation?
After installation, first adjust the overhang using a protractor that suits your tonearm. The slotted holes of the HS-13 allow fine positioning of the cartridge. Next, rebalance the tonearm using the counterweight, set the tracking force recommended by the manufacturer and adjust the anti-skating. If the cartridge height changes, the tonearm height (VTA) should also be checked.
Which wire goes to which pin?
The lead wires follow the standard colour code: white to the left channel (L+), blue to left ground (L−), red to the right channel (R+) and green to right ground (R−). The corresponding markings are usually found directly on the cartridge’s connection pins. Slide the wire clips on using fine tweezers so the pins do not bend.
