What is a headshell and what role does it play on a turntable?

The headshell is the connecting element between the tonearm and the cartridge. It slots or screws onto the end of the tonearm tube and holds the cartridge (the stylus-pickup unit) in place. The four delicate signal wires of the cartridge are routed through the headshell to the internal wiring of the tonearm. But a headshell is far more than a simple bracket: its mass, material and resonance characteristics directly influence the dynamic behaviour of the cartridge system — and therefore the sound ultimately retrieved from the groove.

Which mounting system fits my turntable — and how do I identify it?

By far the most widespread standard is the SME bayonet (also called the "universal headshell connector"): an oval socket with a twist-lock mechanism found on the majority of Japanese and European tonearms — including Technics, Audio-Technica, Ortofon, Jelco and many others. Beyond this, manufacturer-specific connectors exist, such as the Linn system or fixed tonearms with no removable headshell at all. Before purchasing, always check your turntable's manual or consult your dealer — an incompatible connection cannot simply be adapted.

What sonic difference does headshell material make — aluminium, magnesium or carbon?

The material largely determines how the headshell responds to resonances generated by the cartridge and the record itself. Aluminium is the classic choice: affordable, well-damped and forgiving in combination with most cartridges. Magnesium is simultaneously lighter and stiffer — its high specific rigidity shifts unwanted self-resonances into non-critical frequency ranges, resulting in a more precise, more detailed sound. Carbon fibre offers the best stiffness-to-weight ratio of all, damps internal vibrations effectively and is particularly prized in high-end systems. As a rule of thumb: the more capable the cartridge, the more worthwhile it is to invest in a magnesium or carbon headshell — only then can the cartridge fully realise its potential.

How important is headshell weight, and how does it affect tonearm setup?

Headshell weight is a central parameter in system alignment. Together with the compliance (flexibility) of the cartridge, the effective mass of the tonearm — to which the headshell contributes significantly — determines the resonance frequency of the entire system. Ideally this should fall between 8 and 12 Hz: too low and the tonearm becomes prone to motor rumble resonances; too high and the system struggles with warped records and low-frequency disturbances. Headshells are therefore available in different weight classes, typically between 7 and 15 grams. Many manufacturers supply additional weights with their headshells to fine-tune effective mass — a valuable tool when running cartridges with very high or very low compliance.

Can any cartridge be mounted on any headshell?

Broadly speaking, yes — provided the cartridge uses the standard half-inch (½") mounting spacing that virtually all common MM and MC cartridges follow. The headshell's mounting holes are designed for this standard. What varies is the range of longitudinal adjustment available: make sure your headshell offers sufficient scope to set the correct overhang for your tonearm length and preferred distortion-minimisation geometry (Baerwald, Stevenson or Löfgren). Some manufacturers offer headshells with slotted rather than fixed mounting holes — these provide considerably more flexibility during initial setup and make alignment noticeably easier.

How do I mount a cartridge correctly on a headshell — what should I watch out for?

The process requires care but no specialist tools. First, attach the four colour-coded clips (headshell leads) to the cartridge pins — red right (+), green right (−), white left (+), blue left (−). Then fix the cartridge to the headshell with the supplied miniature screws and nuts, without yet finalising the overhang or azimuth. Once inserted into the tonearm, use an alignment protractor to set the correct overhang, check the azimuth (cartridge perpendicular to the record surface), verify the offset angle, and finally set the tracking force and anti-skating compensation. Only once all parameters are confirmed should the mounting screws be tightened — firmly but not excessively, to avoid stressing the cartridge body.

Is a high-quality headshell worth it even with a mid-range cartridge?

Yes — and this is one of the most consistently underestimated upgrades in the analogue chain. A quality headshell made from magnesium or carbon reduces parasitic resonances that would otherwise blur detail and shrink the soundstage. Even a mid-priced cartridge can perform noticeably better in a resonance-free, precisely machined headshell than when clamped in a heavy budget aluminium shell. Conversely, an expensive MC cartridge in a poorly suited headshell will never reach its capabilities. The headshell is not an afterthought — it is a fully active link in the signal chain, and one of the most cost-effective improvements available in analogue playback.

Turntable Accessories · Headshell

The headshell is the most modest-looking part of a turntable, yet one of the most decisive: it holds the cartridge in a precisely defined position above the groove, passes its delicate signal on to the tonearm and, through its mass, helps determine how well arm and cartridge work together. The analogis HS-31 is a precision-made aluminium headshell in the proven Technics pattern — with a universal SME fitting, gold-plated contacts and a refined Titanium-look finish.

It fits virtually any turntable with a J- or S-shaped tonearm and locking collar — from the Technics SL-1200 through countless direct-drive and belt-drive decks from Japanese and European makers to today’s DJ turntables. That makes the HS-31 the ideal replacement for a lost or damaged original headshell, and just as useful as a second one: with a spare cartridge ready-mounted, you can swap between MM and MC, stereo and mono, or a cartridge for your prized collection and a hard-wearing one for car-boot finds in a matter of seconds.

Design & Build

The HS-31 follows the classic Technics geometry, a benchmark for decades and one adopted by many respected manufacturers. The reason for its longevity is simple: the shape combines a torsionally rigid aluminium structure with low mass and an ergonomic finger lift that lets you lower the arm safely and with full control. The choice of aluminium is no accident — it is light, dimensionally stable and gives the cartridge a stiff platform, so that as much of the stylus’s minute movement as possible ends up as signal rather than as resonance in the headshell itself.

The name ‘Titanium’ refers to the finish, not the material: a restrained, technical metallic grey that sits as comfortably on a modern deck as on a vintage turntable with a silver or black arm. The headshell itself is made of aluminium. The HS-31 belongs to a whole family of otherwise identical analogis headshells in different colours, including the HS-29 in gold and the HS-30 in copper — technically the same, so the choice comes down to looks.

Four colour-coded lead wires with gold-plated contacts come factory-fitted. The gold plating protects the connections against oxidation for the long term — which matters, because the signal at this point is measured in millivolts, and with MC cartridges in tenths of a millivolt, where any contact resistance can become audible. A rubber washer on the bayonet ensures a firm, play-free fit between headshell and tonearm once the locking collar is tightened.

Installation & Alignment

The HS-31 accepts any cartridge with a standard ½″ mount — two screws spaced 12.7 mm apart, the most widespread mounting standard for MM and MC cartridges worldwide. The lead wires follow the internationally accepted colour code: red for right positive, green for right negative, white for left positive and blue for left negative. They simply push onto the correspondingly marked pins on the cartridge.

The slotted mounting holes let you slide the cartridge fore and aft to set the overhang precisely — the foundation for correct stylus geometry, low tracking error and therefore low distortion across the whole side of a record. We recommend aligning with a suitable protractor and only tightening the mounting screws evenly once overhang and alignment with the groove are spot on. After fitting the headshell to the tonearm, tighten the locking collar hand-tight — the rubber washer keeps it secure.

Mass & Fine-Tuning

Weighing 9.1 grams, the HS-31 sits squarely within the typical range of classic Technics headshells and so pairs well with most medium-mass tonearms and popular cartridges. If you want to delve deeper into system matching, you can increase its mass with optional screw-on weights adding 2 or 4 grams.

Why this matters: tonearm and cartridge together form a resonant system whose resonant frequency depends on the arm’s effective mass and the compliance of the stylus suspension. Ideally, this resonance falls between roughly 8 and 12 Hz — below the musical signal, but above footfall and record warps. Stiffly suspended, low-compliance cartridges, as many MC designs are, benefit in particular from a little extra mass at the headshell: the resonance shifts down into the optimum range, the bass foundation becomes more solid and tracking more composed. With highly compliant MM cartridges, on the other hand, the light standard configuration is the right choice.

Bear in mind: any change in headshell mass alters the balance of the tonearm. After fitting an add-on weight, the arm must be rebalanced and the tracking force reset. With cartridges that are heavy to begin with, check beforehand that the tonearm’s counterweight still has enough range to cope.

Compatibility

The HS-31 suits any turntable whose tonearm takes a detachable headshell with SME bayonet and locking collar — which covers the majority of decks from Technics, Audio-Technica, Denon, Pioneer, Sony, JVC, Dual, Thorens, Reloop, Stanton and many other makers. It is not suitable for tonearms with an integrated headshell, straight tonearms with an ADC-type fitting or Jelco-style arms — analogis offers dedicated headshell versions for these fittings. P-mount cartridges can only be fitted with an appropriate adaptor.
