Some devices simply play music – others give it a home. For more than four decades, British manufacturer Ruark Audio has been building music systems that do exactly that: serious about sound, meticulous in craftsmanship and designed to be perceived not as technology but as a piece of furniture. To mark its anniversary, Ruark celebrates this tradition with the R410 Anniversary Edition – a strictly limited special edition in light oak that brings together everything the brand has stood for since its earliest days.

Yet the R410 is far more than a beautiful radio. A single 56 cm wide wooden cabinet houses a fully active 120 W stereo amplifier, a full-fledged two-way speaker system, hi-res streaming with every relevant service, an MM phono stage for your turntable and HDMI eARC for your TV. Vinyl, radio, streaming and TV sound all come together here – a system that brings music lovers of every generation to the same table, however they prefer to listen.

Sonically, Ruark relies on a genuine stereo concept rather than gimmicks. Two 20 mm silk dome tweeters handle the treble – finely resolved, silky and free of the harshness that hard diaphragms can develop at higher volumes. Below them, two 100 mm long-throw drivers of the NS+ generation take care of the midrange and lower frequencies. Their generous excursion allows them to move a remarkable amount of air even from a compact cabinet: voices take on a tangible presence in the room, while double bass and kick drum gain foundation and punch.

This is supported by a dual bass reflex enclosure that deliberately extends low-frequency reproduction without thickening the bass. Everything is driven by a fully active Class D amplifier delivering 120 W RMS – efficient, cool-running and powerful enough to fill even larger living spaces with ease. Because amplifier, drivers and cabinet are matched from the outset, there is none of the usual guesswork involved in combining separate components: the system sounds exactly the way its engineers intended.

When it comes to streaming, the R410 leaves nothing to be desired. Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and the recently launched Qobuz Connect are controlled directly from their respective apps – your smartphone simply acts as a remote, while the music streams in full quality straight from the network. With Apple AirPlay and Chromecast built-in, the R410 also integrates into existing Apple or Google multiroom setups. High-resolution files up to 32-bit / 384 kHz, UPnP media servers on your home network and internet radio round off the digital offering, while Bluetooth with aptX HD is on hand for spontaneous playback.

At the same time, the R410 is a friend of the record: the built-in RIAA phono stage for MM cartridges accepts a turntable directly – no additional phono preamp, no cable clutter. Via HDMI eARC, your TV connects with a single cable, and films and series benefit audibly from true stereo instead of thin TV speakers. An optical TOSLINK input (24-bit / 192 kHz) for a games console or older sources, plus DAB, DAB+ and FM, make the system a complete hub for every listening habit.

Ruark products are recognisable at first glance – by their warmth, their proportions and their consistent use of wood. The cabinet and front grille of the Anniversary Edition are elaborately crafted from sustainable woods; the exclusive light oak finish is reserved for this anniversary edition and brings a bright, Scandinavian-inspired lightness to any room. At 133 mm high and 290 mm deep, the system fits on a sideboard, lowboard or shelf without dominating the space.

Operating the R410 is as intuitive as you would expect from Ruark. At its heart is the RotoDial – Ruark’s signature rotary controller, supplied here as a rechargeable Bluetooth remote. Volume, source selection and navigation are handled with a turn and a press, with no batteries to replace. The high-resolution 4-inch TFT colour display shows station information, track titles and cover art clearly – a system you can use without ever opening a manual.

If you don’t want to part with your CD collection alongside streaming and vinyl, you can complement the R410 with the optional Ruark R-CD100 CD drive. In its “Ebony” finish, it is visually matched to the front grille of the Anniversary Edition and blends harmoniously into the overall look.

The R410 Anniversary Edition is aimed at anyone who takes music seriously but would rather not fill their living room with components, cables and racks – and at collectors who want to own a special piece of Ruark history.
