There are hi-fi systems you hide away in a rack — and there are those you arrange a living room around. The Ruark R810 belongs firmly in the second category. Ruark Audio, based in Southend-on-Sea, England, since 1985, has reimagined the classic radiogram time and again: music as a piece of furniture, built to the standards of a serious hi-fi system. The R810 takes this idea to its logical conclusion — a one-metre-wide, free-standing music system on its own stand that brings hi-res streaming, radio, TV sound and your turntable together in a single, beautifully crafted cabinet.

Inside, there is far more than a radio: a 180-watt Class A/B amplifier drives a genuine 4.1 speaker system — two bass-reflex satellites with silk dome tweeters and 100 mm woofers, complemented by a separately enclosed 200 mm long-throw subwoofer. An integrated MM phono input makes your turntable a direct partner, with no additional phono stage required. And with Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay 2 and Chromecast built-in, the R810 speaks the language of virtually every modern music source.

The acoustic concept of the R810 follows the layout of a classic satellite-subwoofer system — except that everything comes together in one piece of furniture. On the left and right, two tuned bass-reflex satellite enclosures each house a 30 mm silk dome tweeter and a 100 mm woofer. The silk domes deliver finely resolved, silky and natural treble that reveals detail without ever sounding harsh or intrusive. Thanks to the cabinet’s generous one-metre width, the satellites sit far apart — creating a stereo image that compact all-in-one systems simply cannot achieve.

The foundation comes from Ruark’s own 200 mm long-throw woofer in a separate subwoofer enclosure. This separation is crucial: low frequencies can unfold freely without colouring the midrange and vocals. Double bass, organ pedals and cinematic explosions gain real impact and definition. Everything is powered by a 180-watt 4.1-channel Class A/B amplifier — a circuit topology that many hi-fi enthusiasts cherish precisely for its warm, organic and effortless character, and one that is now the exception rather than the rule in systems of this kind.

For record lovers, the R810 is a real find: the RCA phono input for MM cartridges accepts your turntable directly. No extra phono stage, no additional cables, no separate box on the shelf. Pair a quality turntable fitted with a moving magnet cartridge with the R810 and you have a complete, stylish vinyl system that is ready to play in moments.

On the digital side, the R810 handles high-resolution music files up to 32-bit / 384 kHz — whether streamed in studio quality from Qobuz or played from a UPnP media server or NAS holding your own music collection. You hear recordings with the full dynamics and fine detail the engineers heard in the studio.

Few music systems are as open as the R810. Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Qobuz Connect are controlled directly from their respective apps, while Apple AirPlay 2 and Chromecast built-in bring almost any music app from iPhone, iPad, Mac or Android devices to the system — and allow integration into existing multiroom setups. Add to that internet radio, DAB/DAB+ and FM, plus Bluetooth with aptX HD for guests and spontaneous listening.

As a home cinema partner, the R810 reveals its second strength: via HDMI eARC it takes over your TV’s sound and replaces any soundbar with a fullness you simply cannot expect from a slim bar beneath the screen. An optical TOSLINK input supporting up to 24-bit / 192 kHz also accommodates a CD player, games console or older TV.

Ruark’s signature RotoDial has become a wireless, rechargeable Bluetooth remote on the R810. The tactile rotary-push controller rests on the coffee table or in your hand and controls volume, source selection and menus with the same intuitive gesture — no aiming, no batteries, no sea of buttons. The high-resolution 4-inch colour display shows stations, tracks and album information in crisp, easy-to-read detail.

The result is a music system that feels self-explanatory for every member of the household: the radio in the morning, a record in the afternoon, a playlist or film in the evening — all through a single device, without switching between components and remote controls.

At one metre wide with a slim cabinet height of just 152 mm, the R810 looks calm, elongated and elegant. On its stand it reaches an overall height of 650 mm — the ideal position to project sound into the room at seated ear level while standing as a piece of furniture in its own right. The solid front grille underlines its premium, durable feel, and a total weight of 27.5 kg speaks for a solid, low-resonance construction.
