Cleaning records is routine work — and it's precisely where routine sets in that the most annoying damage happens: the LP gets placed on the table, slips while brushing, and a tiny grain of sand on the wooden surface drags a fine scratch across the back side. A proper cleaning mat is therefore not a gimmick but basic equipment for anyone who looks after their collection — cheap insurance against a moment of inattention.

The Dynavox LP cleaning mat handles this task in a calm, matter-of-fact way. A 35 × 35 cm polyurethane mat, around 2 mm thick, with a soft top side and a non-slip underside — fundamentally, that's all it needs to be, and all it wants to be. The German brand Dynavox from Iffezheim has been known for over two decades for offering sensible HiFi accessories at fair prices, and this mat is a typical example: not a designer object, but a tool that simply does what it's supposed to do, quietly becoming a fixture on every record-care station.

The mat is made of a soft, foamed polyurethane — a material used for good reason in protective pads for sensitive workpieces and in toolmaking. Polyurethane is both compliant and chemical-resistant: the surface conforms to the back of the record rather than only making contact at a few points — grains of sand and dust are essentially embedded in it instead of being ground between a hard surface and the vinyl. At the same time, common cleaning fluids based on alcohol or surfactants are no problem for the material; a few drops on the side leave no lasting damage.

The roughly 2 mm material thickness is deliberately chosen: thin enough that the mat lies flat and stable on the table and doesn't curl up while being handled, thick enough to provide genuine cushioning. The underside is given a non-slip texture — a detail that makes a real difference in practice as soon as you draw a carbon brush across the record with some pressure, or distribute a cleaning solution with a cloth. The mat stays where it is; your hands can concentrate on the actual cleaning.

The mat fits into virtually every manual cleaning process: dry cleaning with a carbon brush or velvet roller, wet cleaning with cleaning fluid and microfibre cloth, spot cleaning of stubborn fingerprints, and as a safe resting place next to a record washing machine when freshly cleaned LPs need a temporary home. If you work with a label protector, the record sits on the mat, the label gets sealed off, and you can brush away without the LP shifting under pressure.

The 35 × 35 cm size is dimensioned for the standard 12-inch radius (30 cm diameter) and provides just under 2.5 cm of margin all around — enough so that even slightly off-centre records, or your cleaning hand itself, don't slip past the edge of the mat. 10" maxi-singles and 7" singles also fit comfortably; with the smaller formats, the free mat surface can additionally serve as a place to set down brush, cloth and cleaning bottle.

The soft, non-slip polyurethane surface makes the mat a practical all-purpose work surface for sensitive items beyond record cleaning: cleaning watches and jewellery, swapping cartridges or headshells (where dropped screws otherwise tend to vanish into wooden floorboards), caring for CDs and SACDs, or simply unpacking a delicate HiFi component. In understated black, it blends visually into any workshop or care environment and can be wiped down dry or, if needed, cleaned with a damp cloth after use.
