Service · Record cleaning & sealing
Vinyl only sounds as good as the condition of its grooves allows. Even well-cared-for records accumulate invisible contamination deep in the microgroove over time — dust, pressing residue, fingerprints, oxidised particles — leading to crackle, noise and premature stylus wear. This service combines professional deep cleaning on the Clearaudio Double Matrix Professional with subsequent sealing using the proven LAST Formula 2 Record Preservative — two steps that turn a tired record into a fresh listening experience again and protect the grooves for the long term.
Before treatment, every record is visually inspected under special lighting to assess its condition and level of soiling. After cleaning and sealing, the record can optionally be placed in a new coated inner sleeve that has an anti-static effect and reliably prevents recontamination in storage. The entire process is standardised and reproducible — every record receives the same careful treatment, regardless of age or initial condition.

Step 1 — Professional vacuum cleaning
The Clearaudio Double Matrix Professional is one of the most renowned vacuum record cleaning machines on the market. It cleans both sides of the record simultaneously: cleaning fluid is applied to the rotating record, worked into the grooves and then completely extracted by vacuum — including all loosened dirt and particle residue. Unlike methods relying on air-drying or compressed-air blowers, this guarantees that no residue remains in the grooves which, once dry, would form new deposits and make the next clean necessary.
The cleaning fluid dissolves organic and inorganic contaminants, pressing residue from production and oxidised particles that have become lodged deep in the groove structure. The result: a record that not only looks clean on the surface, but whose grooves are genuinely free of anything that could burden the sound and the stylus. In most cases the difference is immediately audible on playback — less crackle, black silence between tracks, more dynamics and depth in the sound.
Step 2 — Sealing with LAST Formula 2
A look at the physics of playback shows that cleaning alone is not everything: the stylus diamond moves at high speed through the narrow vinyl groove, creates a pressure wave in front of it and, through friction and micro-heat, leaves minimal traces with every play — even on the cleanest record. After 10 to 20 plays, an untreated groove already shows the first signs of abrasion and deposits under the microscope.
The LAST Formula 2 Record Preservative addresses exactly this. Developed in Livermore, California since 1979, the formula diffuses chemically into the top molecular layers of the vinyl — around ten layers deep — and bonds permanently with the surface there. The result is not an applied film but a structural change to the groove surface itself: more resistant to the mechanical stress of the diamond, less prone to static charge, quieter in the background. The manufacturer and independent testers confirm that the protection lasts for at least 200 plays and the record sounds lastingly fresher and quieter than without treatment. Sonically, users report a more relaxed, clearer sound — with more micro-detail and livelier dynamics.
Important: LAST Formula 2 leaves no residue on the record surface and is not picked up by the stylus diamond. It is completely neutral towards the sound of the original recording — it protects without colouring. On regularly played records, the treatment should be repeated after approx. 100–200 plays to maintain the protective effect.
How the sealing works in detail, why vinyl wears during playback in the first place and how LAST differs from silicone and anti-static sprays is explained in our comprehensive guide Sealing vinyl records with LAST Preservative – including illustrations and step-by-step instructions.
