Breaking down Santana's tightly lashed bundles of music into manageable pieces of style is like a game of mikado that's impossible to win, even for surgery-experienced art-operators. Whether the stick is called funk, jazz, rock, R&B or folk: when trying to pry out the individual with pointed fingers, the whole litter vibrates along with it.
How simple, on the other hand, seems the often undertaken attempt to sort the track lists according to more or less commercially centered compilations. Once the ranking has finally been meticulously evaluated and wisely explained to the circle of friends, everyone is allowed to take in the juicy string roulades of a box office hit like "Caravanserai" (Columbia KC 31610) or "Welcome" (Columbia PC 32455) again, grinning broadly - quality can pay off after all.
In his seventh album, the guitar guru once again surrounds himself with many freshly recruited fellow musicians and star producer David Rubinson. The latter watched over the creation of the project, which is very reminiscent of the early Santana sound: Be it the palpable vocal infatuation and the abundance of buzzing, thumping, clanking, clicking rhythms or the inimitable frothy whisked guitar solos, without which a Santana record is unthinkable. So what's the point of sounding out styles, genres, and buyer groups, when this record is at least one of the six or seven (or was it eight?) most important ones? With Santana, in the end, all amigos remain.
