AD653-2 - Records EP Adapter - Nagaoka

Turntable accessories - Adapters & centering aids

The 7-inch single with a large center hole is a child of the format war between Columbia and RCA Victor in 1949. At that time, RCA relied on a 38.1 mm diameter hole - robust enough for heavy use in jukeboxes, but incompatible with the 7 mm turntable spines designed for LPs. Seven decades later, this legacy from record history is still alive and well: If you want to play a classic US single or a jukebox pressing on your modern turntable, you need an adapter. The Nagaoka AD653-2 is just that - and in a quality that you can see at first glance.

Made from high-quality milled aluminum, the AD653-2 sits precisely on the platter mandrel and reliably centers the EP on the turntable - without play or wobbling. The solid metal gives the adapter a pleasant heaviness and quality that cheap plastic alternatives simply cannot match. Manufacturer Nagaoka, one of the most renowned producers of cartridge systems and turntable accessories from Japan, has stood for precision and durability for decades - and the AD653-2 is a small but convincing example of this.

At first glance, an EP adapter may seem like a small thing - but in practice, its accuracy of fit directly determines the playback quality. If the single sits off-center on the turntable with the smallest amount of play, the needle no longer runs exactly in the groove, but describes a slightly elliptical path. The result is periodic pitch fluctuations, increased distortion and, in the worst case, premature record wear. The precise milling seat of the Nagaoka AD653-2 prevents precisely this: the EP lies centered, free of play and smoothly on the platter - just as it should be played.

The material also plays a role: While plastic adapters can tire, deform or loosen on the mandrel over time, the milled aluminum of the AD653-2 retains its dimensional stability over the long term. Anyone who owns a large collection of singles and regularly plays 7-inch pressings with a large hole - be it classic rock'n'roll, soul, reggae or rare jukebox pressings - will immediately notice the difference compared to the plastic adapters supplied.
