Record care & cleaning
Cleaner listening, longer enjoyment
Dust and dirt in the groove cost sound quality, cause crackle and put strain on the stylus. With the right vinyl care, your records stay quiet, detailed and hold their value. At Klangheimat you will find proven care products – from carbon fibre brushes and cleaning kits to record cleaning machines.
Clean records sound better
Clean grooves mean less surface noise and more detail.
No dust build-up that dirties the stylus and wears it out faster.
Well-cared-for pressings keep their sound quality and collector value.
Brush before every play, wet clean when needed – that keeps it simple.
Why regular cleaning matters
Even new records are rarely truly clean: pressing residues, paper fibres from the inner sleeve and airborne dust settle in the groove. Every time you play the record, the stylus pushes this dirt deeper. Regular vinyl care keeps the groove clear – protecting both record and cartridge.
Less crackle and hiss, more calm and finer detail.
Less dirt on the stylus tip, less wear.
For record and stylus – dirt acts like an abrasive.
Clean records in fresh inner sleeves look the part, too.
Cleaning methods compared
The right method depends on the condition of the record and your expectations. A combination of dry and wet cleaning is often ideal:
| Method | Effect | Effort | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon fibre brush (dry) | Removes loose dust and discharges static | Seconds, before every play | Everyday care |
| Wet cleaning by hand | Removes fingerprints and stubborn dirt | Moderate, with fluid and pad or brush | Occasional deep cleaning |
| Record cleaning machine with vacuum | Washes the groove and vacuums off fluid and dirt | Low per record, ideal for larger quantities | Collectors, used records |
| Ultrasonic record cleaning machine | Cleans right down to the bottom of the groove, very thorough | Low per record, higher investment | Audiophile standards |
| Klangheimat washing service | Professional deep cleaning without your own machine | None – just send them in | Individual treasures or entire collections |
Don’t want to buy your own machine? Our record washing service cleans your records professionally – from €1.59 per record.
Record cleaning machines: which type?
A record cleaning machine pays off as soon as you wet clean records regularly – especially used records. Three types are common:
- —Manual cleaning systems: The record is turned by hand through a bath of cleaning fluid with brushes and then air-dried. Affordable and effective for getting started.
- —With vacuum: Cleaning fluid is applied and then vacuumed off together with the loosened dirt. The record is dry immediately afterwards – the standard for collectors.
- —Ultrasonic: Tiny bubbles loosen dirt deep in the groove without anything touching it. The most thorough method for high standards.
- —Drying & accessories: Drying racks, label protectors and suitable cleaning fluid make every method safer and more convenient.
The right care routine
Follow this simple routine and your records will stay in top condition:
- —Before every play: Briefly brush the spinning record with a carbon fibre brush – this removes loose dust and static.
- —New and used records: Give them one thorough wet clean before they join your collection. With second-hand records in particular, this often makes an audible difference.
- —After washing: Put the clean record into a fresh, anti-static inner sleeve – you will find suitable record sleeves in our shop.
- —Don’t forget the stylus: The stylus collects dirt too. Regular stylus cleaning protects both cartridge and record.
- —Store correctly: Upright, protected from dust and away from heat – find out more under storage & organisation.
Our record flattening service brings warped records back into shape.
What makes sense for whom?
Record care makes sense for beginners and experts alike – only the scope differs:
A carbon fibre brush and a cleaning kit are enough to care for a growing collection.
A record cleaning machine with vacuum or our washing service – ideal for used records and older pressings.
Ultrasonic cleaning for maximum silence in the groove and that last bit of detail.

Frequently asked questions about record care
How often should I clean my records?
Dry with a carbon fibre brush before every play. Records are wet cleaned once when they join your collection and afterwards only as needed – for example if you hear crackle or see fingerprints.
Dry or wet cleaning – which is better?
The two complement each other. The brush removes loose dust and static day to day, while wet cleaning loosens stubborn dirt from the groove. For a thorough clean, there is no way around wet cleaning.
Is a record cleaning machine worth it?
If you regularly buy used records or look after a larger collection, yes. A machine cleans more thoroughly and faster than washing by hand. For individual records, our washing service is an affordable alternative.
What is the difference between vacuum and ultrasonic cleaning?
Vacuum machines wash the groove with fluid and brushes and then vacuum off the loosened dirt. Ultrasonic machines loosen dirt contact-free using tiny bubbles right down to the bottom of the groove – particularly thorough, but usually more expensive.
Can I clean records with household products?
We advise against it. Washing-up liquid, glass cleaner or household alcohol can leave residues in the groove or damage the label. Dedicated cleaning fluids are designed for vinyl and evaporate without residue.
Do I need to wash new records?
It is worth it. New records often carry pressing residues and paper fibres from the inner sleeve. A single wet clean often results in noticeably less surface noise.
Do I need new inner sleeves after washing?
Yes, we recommend it. Old paper sleeves pass fibres and dirt straight back onto the freshly cleaned record. Anti-static inner sleeves keep the record clean.
How much does the record washing service cost?
Our washing service starts at €1.59 per record. You will find all details and the booking option under record washing.
